Uber Supports Healthcare Workers with the Launch of Uber Medics

Initiative is part of Uber’s Global Commitment to Move What Matters
Uber, the global ride-hailing platform that connects riders with drivers, has pledged free rides and deliveries in the Middle East, North Africa, and Pakistan (MENAP) region, specifically for frontline workers including the medical staff of hospitals and local NGOs, in an effort to move what matters during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Uber Medics is designed to ensure that healthcare workers, who need to be mobile, have a reliable and efficient way of getting around. With this effort, the company hopes that this 24/7 dedicated service gives hospitals and their workers the flexibility to provide optimal healthcare.
In partnership with hospitals including Shifa International, Benazir Bhutto, and PIMS, Uber Medics will provide free rides for their medical workers and essential staff, who will easily be able to book a ride to their respective homes or healthcare locations with the tap of a button from the Uber app. This service has been designed to ensure the health and safety of both riders and drivers, and also extends to NGO programs which support the marginalized sector of the society.
Uber Pakistan’s GM, Saad Naveed Pall commented, “We understand the necessity of social-distancing in current times and encourage our riders to stay at home. It is, however, imperative to support the healthcare staff of our country, a majority of whom depend on ride-sharing as a primary means of transport. Our partner drivers are equally assisting our communities through this crisis and with the necessary alterations in our services, we intend to offer them some degree of relief, and added convenience to the riders.”
Uber has also taken the necessary steps to ensure the safety of its partner drivers and is reimbursing them for the appropriate protective gear required in their vehicles to help minimize the risk of transmission.
COVID-19 has so far affected more than 13,000 lives in Pakistan, with a significant hit to the global economy. In these circumstances, Uber seeks to venture out in innovative ways to bring economic opportunities for its partner drivers, and cater to the needs of current times. Uber Delivery, for instance, was recently launched in Lahore, Islamabad and now Karachi, enabling customers to request for essential items to be dropped off at their doorstep. Uber is committed to responsibly use its technology to support the public in these altering times and also work together with the local authorities along with other entities to soldier through this pandemic.

New report reveals the ideal accounting practices for governments to deliver transparency for their citizens

Pensioners without pensions. Schools without students. Wells without water.

A report issued jointly by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) and IFAC (the International Federation of Accountants), Is cash still king? Maximising the benefits of accrual information in the public sector not only confirms that a complete public sector transition to accrual accounting will serve the public interest, but also contains 30 specific recommendations to improve accrual implementation.

Good decision-making requires the right information. Given that most government decisions have financial implications, understanding the economic reality of a government’s activities improves the quality of decisions made. The report predicts that by 2023, the number of countries reporting their financial position on an accruals basis is expected to increase from 37 to 98, jumping from 25% to 65% among 150 countries surveyed.

These are human consequences that can result – and do result – when governments don’t have the financial information necessary to make the best long-term decisions for their citizens. Cash accounting, which 75 per cent of governments around the world use in some form, does not present the most accurate picture of a government’s financial health, nor does it enable adequately planning for the development, delivery, and maintenance of the services, programmes, and infrastructure on which people rely.  And that, in turn, leads to a breakdown of trust in governments.

The report’s author, ACCA’s Head of Public Sector Policy, Alex Metcalfe, said: ‘Moving to accruals needs to be more than a compliance exercise, it should be about making the best use of financial information.  The range of benefits highlight in this report demonstrates the clear upside to implementing accruals in the public sector.  We need to ask whether cash is still king, when it comes to financial reporting and budgeting.

‘The accounting profession’s public interest mandate is nowhere more apparent than in the public sector, where high-quality reporting and budgeting is a prerequisite for government transparency and effective delivery of public services,’ said Kevin Dancey, CEO of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). ‘To the finance professionals and public sector decision makers who are leading the transition from cash to accrual accounting, we commend you and support you.’

The benefits and complexity arising from accruals varies by types of adoption. The report notes that:
·       Cash accounting and budgeting is the simplest basis but provides the least decision-useful information.
·       Accrual accounting combined with cash budgeting is the most complex basis, but it generates information that helps achieve value for money, facilitates public scrutiny, and supports sustainable decision-making.
·       Accrual accounting and accrual budgeting creates a ‘medium level of complexity’ and creates consistency. In addition to realising the benefits from implementing accrual accounting, this environment also puts finance right at the heart of decision making and allows governments to embed effective performance management.
·       New, decision-useful information generated by accrual implementation promotes the achievement of value for money and facilitates effective public scrutiny.
·       To produce decision-useful information, governments must set objectives; plan; engage stakeholders; create effective systems; and develop the right skills, including internal training beyond preparers.

This report recommends that governments implementing accruals should be:

·       Directing independent fiscal policy institutions to assess contingent liabilities and produce recurring fiscal risk reports.
·       Implementing accrual budgeting to put finance at the heart of decision-making, while embedding performance management across government.
·       Planning to produce a fully consolidated balance sheet that provides a full financial picture of the resources and risks for the public sector. This must include State-owned Enterprises at the whole-of-government level.
·       Building political challenges into the implementation roadmap from the beginning (e.g., through a sunset clause requiring the eventual recognition of employee pension liabilities).
·       Including groups that provide a constructive challenge function to the reform, such as auditors and legislative committees (e.g. the UK’s Public Accounts Committee).
·       Deploying experts centrally to control consulting costs and support implementation across government.

Kevin Dancey, CEO IFAC, concluded: ‘IFAC and ACCA are committed to supporting the adoption and implementation of International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS), which underpin public sector accrual accounting, and to developing a robust profession that implements and manages such systems. With 65 per cent of governments globally set to implement accrual accounting by 2023, we’re encouraged by the positive trend, and strongly support further adoption of accruals and IPSAS.’

Locked Down? Not a Problem - This is How Our Smartphones Can Keep You Covered

There is an opportunity in every challenge. At a time where the whole humanity is making unified efforts to ensure public-health, social-distancing has been enforced in Pakistan too. However, on the positive side, the current situation has unleashed the tremendous potential of digital connectivity to create unprecedented convenience for the masses. Smart-devices are enabling the world to communicate and work-from-home, cohesively, by sharing real-time information and moving rapidly towards e-Commerce, on a much larger scale.

While the WHO’s health-advisories and safety-protocols are being followed, in all cities of Pakistan and around the world, peoples’ dependence on smartphones is rising, enabling smooth interactions, working, shopping and infotainment. Many companies in Pakistan are rapidly diverting towards online business models, where the consumers can digitally place orders for many products and services, round-the-clock, on-the-go. So, many more buyers will not need to leave their homes now, as the products and services can be delivered at their doorstep.

Nestled comfortably in their homes, almost a hundred million Pakistanis can enjoy the exciting features of their smart devices, while remaining in touch with the world around them and perform their daily household errands and tasks. Online shopping provides great relief, allowing the families to meet their daily needs. Similarly, Work-From-Home is facilitated by video-chats, e-Mails and Social-Media applications, designed to connect the people with their friends, family and co-workers.

Just because people are spending their time at home for a few weeks, it does not mean that their professional-productivity, family-time, friendships, should be reduced. They have more time and freedom to connect with their loved ones and it is more important than ever before. Millions of people around the world are staying indoors now but thanks to the powerful video features, staying in touch with everyone is not that complicated. People are now using photos and videos to share with family and loved ones, but also for work purposes when needed.

Since many Pakistanis have donned their creative hats to demonstrate their talents to the world. Activities like; photography, music, arts, cooking, fitness, make-up and many more tutorials or contests, are making indoor lives more fun. Talents & performances are being shared across borders, creating new bonds, collaborations and so much more. Hence, smartphones are not just being used to browse social media or watch content.

Innovative technologies companies are creating smarter devices, with more features and functions. One exemplary enterprise, Huawei has a wide range of products, like the newly launched P40 Pro, which promises superior video and photo quality for the users who seek advanced camera setup. With this phone, the users can not only enjoy a premium camera setup, but also a strong and stable 5G connectivity for quick and smooth sharing, at a very attractive price.

With its Ultra Vision Leica Quad Camera setup, users can enjoy stunning quality for the pictures and videos they capture and share with friends and family. The camera setup consists of a 50MP Ultra Vision Wide Camera, a 40MP Ultra-Wide Cine Camera, a 12MP 5x Optical Telephoto Camera and a ToF Camera. However, one of the most innovative features on this device is the HUAWEI Ultra Vision Wide Camera Sensor, one of the largest camera sensors in the industry measuring 1/1.28 inches, which ensures crisp details, even in low light conditions for both photography and videography. The photos taken are of such high quality that even cropping people or objects separately still retain high amounts of detail. Selfie is also improved by the front dual camera setup that includes a Depth camera and a 32MP AF camera that can record videos in 4K capturing every detail perfectly.

On the connectivity front, having everyone at home with multiple devices can crowd the router’s bandwidth, slowing down Internet connectivity for important tasks. With the HUAWEI P40’s 5G capabilities, switching to the mobile network also works as a perfect solution. Thanks to its Kirin 990 5G chipset, users can enjoy fast connectivity and efficient performance when they are trying to work from home.

The lockdown has also resulted in users having to turn towards online shopping portals for example, which has them browsing through various supermarket apps or online platforms to shop for every day groceries. Thanks to the HUAWEI P40 Pro’s HUAWEI Quad-Curve Overflow Display, which curves at all four sides and has minimal bezels, the viewing experience is more immersive than ever. With the TÜV Rheinland screen certification, users need not worry about extensive use as the screen filters out unwanted and harmful blue light. If this display is not enough, users can also use the Multi-Screen Collaboration* feature to wirelessly stream the phone’s display to their compatible HUAWEI MateBook. This way grocery shopping can be done on the side, while wrapping up every day emails for work.
*Available on compatible HUAWEI MateBooks and smartphones only

Users need not worry about finding any apps on their phones as well, because the HUAWEI P40 Pro comes with the HUAWEI AppGallery, one of the top 3 app market places globally, complete with a wide range of local and global apps, sorted into 18 different categories ranging from games to entertainment, business, sports and many more.

With the dependency on smartphones increasing, it is a given that the phone’s battery life plays an important role. Users want to be more hands-on with their smartphone and spend less time having it plugged to a wall. The HUAWEI P40 Pro comes with a large capacity 4200 mAh battery for all-day performance. Charging the battery back-up does not take too long either thanks to the TÜV Rheinland safety-certified HUAWEI Wired 40W SuperCharge. The HUAWEI P40 Pro also supports HUAWEI’s fast wireless SuperCharge technology and incorporates an improved generation of reverse wireless charging capabilities that can charge other compatible devices more quickly and more efficiently.

The HUAWEI P40 Pro is the best device, to help you take care of all your tasks on a daily basis, especially professional assignments, thanks to its premium flagship features. Be it for everyday use, working from home or even to be in touch with loved ones, the HUAWEI P40 Pro has a solution for it all.

Covid-19: The pandemic impacts people, cash flow and the ability to reforecast, says ACCA’s new research

Organisations large and small, in the public and private sectors, have expressed deep concerns about the impact of Covid-19 on their people, productivity and cashflow, according to ACCA’s new global research among 10,000 finance professionals, including an expert panel of 353 in Pakistan.

Head of ACCA, Pakistan, Sajjeed Aslam, said: ‘Our research shows the most severe impact on businesses is employee productivity being negatively affected, with 56% of respondents saying this is the case. Also 46% of business leaders suggest their organisations are facing significant cash flow problems.

‘Only 31% of businesses have managed to do a financial reforecast, and 39% of these consider a worst-case scenario will be negative revenue growth of 50% or more compared to the previous financial year. With 34% of organisations already freezing recruitment, businesses are looking to gain help from banks and debt providers.’

Sajjeed Aslam revealed the survey’s aim was to explore difficulties faced by organisations of all sizes across the country.

He said: ‘This research aims to understand the business and financial blows to organisations across the country. It is seen through the lens of ACCA Pakistan’s members – finance professionals supporting a wide range of businesses and organisations at this hugely difficult time.

‘The findings gauge the short to medium term implications, while also looking at the measures being undertaken and considered by organisations to mitigate the damage. It also looks at what lessons we can all learn from the pandemic.’

Mr Aslam highlighted crucial advice for firms to follow in these unprecedented times, adding:
‘ACCA’s recommending that organisations follow the ‘three As’ of crisis planning – Act to respond in a sustainable manner and focus on employees and stakeholders; Analyse the different information sources to secure your organisation; and Anticipate the business impact and future trends.’

Jamie Lyon, the report’s author, explains: ‘Everyone is hurting, but particularly the smaller organisations. Financing and cash flow are concerns to everyone, but even more so for small organisations. For many of us, the ‘face of work’ has changed overnight. In the short term, leaders are facing a very difficult operating environment when it comes to employee productivity and engagement, alongside a number of compounding and wide-ranging challenges - stifled and stalled customer demand, supply chain disruption, people mobility issues, product and service delays or deferments, investment challenges and so on.

‘All this is of course translating to the financials being affected because fundamentally all of these blows are interconnected. But what’s heartening to see is many organisations’ commitment to ensuring the health and wellbeing of employees, customers and other stakeholders first and foremost.’

The main findings for Pakistan show:

·       56% - Employee productivity negatively affected
·       46% - Cash flow problems
·       31% - Customers stopped / reduced purchase – customers impacted by the virus
·       37% - Having to defer launch of new products and services
·       23% - Customers stopped / reduced purchases – supply chain disrupted
·       And 69% of organisations have not been able to do a financial reforecast, perhaps due to the fast-evolving scale and duration of the Covid – 19 pandemic alongside the extent of necessary social distancing controls put in place by governments, which have created vast uncertainties for businesses.

Sajjeed Aslam concludes: ‘Overall the data confirms Covid-19 is a huge challenge across all sectors and sizes of business, and regions and countries. The main issue is uncertainty, which affects the ability of organisations to plan properly, to react and to forecast appropriately. While talking of silver linings may be very hard at this time, we need to think about every opportunity, and to consider every option available to keep businesses large and small afloat.’

·    ACCA is holding a webinar on the 16 April 2020 to discuss these findings, which will be published in full on the 27 April 2020: http://accamember.newsweaver.co.uk/invitation/1586s9wf53w
·       The survey supporting this research closed on Thursday 26 March 2020.
·       Please refer to ACCA’s Covid-19 Hub, which includes useful resources to help organisations deal with the impacts and implications, including advice for ACCA members in practice and in business, students, and a section on wellbeing.

Working from home? Here are some of the best ways the HUAWEI P40 Pro will help

Who would have thought in their wildest imagination that such a day would come when working-from-home would become so mainstream. With the current situation, more than half of the world’s population is under lockdown, giving rise to unprecedented work-from-home scenarios.

Now, working from home may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Some say it makes them lazy, while others feel too cosy at home. Is your home network going to be stable enough or can you stay safe from straying away to the first distraction you see? Or what if your child decides to play games or watch movies on your phone and drains out the battery? These might just be a few of the things that run in your mind when you consider working from home, especially if you are someone who has not worked remotely 100 percent. However, this is just a new setting to get adapted to and one of the tools we tend to rely on the most right now is our smartphone.

Not to worry, because with the HUAWEI P40 Pro’s 5G capabilities, flagship performance and long-lasting battery, you are promised a seamless working from home experience, maybe even improving your performance! Here are some of the ways Huawei’s latest flagship can help.

Ensure a strong and stable connection at all times
One of the most important requirements of working from home is a solid Internet connection that you can rely on to not drop mid-way during a conference call or while you are uploading or downloading heavy files. Your home internet connection might be able to do this, but now that the entire family is at home and everyone is connected to the WiFi, be it for e-learning or even for entertainment, it can potentially slow down your network.

This is where you would need to depend on your mobile network. If you have access to 5G networks, the HUAWEI P40 Pro’s 5G capabilities ensure that you have nothing to worry about. Thanks to its Kirin 990 5G chipset, you are ensured a strong and stable connection that you can rely on for all your office needs, along with strong and efficient performance. The unique architecture of the chipset also enables support for 2G/3G/4G networks as well! Simply hotspot it to your laptop and you are good to go. For using WiFi networks however, the HUAWEI P40 Pro’s Wi-Fi 6 Plus capability for an accelerated network experience comes in handy when working from home or handling multiple tasks together.

A long-lasting battery life for all your needs
This also means you need a smartphone that is capable of lasting long on a single charge as you would be doing a lot more with it. Video conferencing for office work or even with friends and family during social distancing are all battery consuming, which is all the more reason why you need a massive battery on your smartphone that charges up quickly as well. The HUAWEI P40 Pro comes with a massive 4200mAh battery and a 40W HUAWEI SuperCharge, along with support for Huawei’s wireless Supercharge features to charge your phone back up faster than ever.

Keep away from distractions
To further enhance your productivity and reduce distractions, you can use the HUAWEI P40 Pro’s Multi-Screen Collaboration* feature. With a simple tap, you can seamlessly and wirelessly stream your phone’s display on your compatible HUAWEI MateBook laptop. This allows for easy transfer between files with a simple drag and drop, enables you to use smartphone apps on the laptops screen and even allows you to control both devices with the same peripherals as the laptop. You can even pick up calls on your laptop and use the laptop’s speakers and mic.

An app for everything…
If you are looking for a few productivity enhancing apps to help you while working, the HUAWEI P40 Pro also comes with the HUAWEI AppGallery, which has a wide range of global and local apps to help you in every task. Simply open HUAWEI AppGallery, browse to categories and search through the Business and Tools categories to find the apps you need.
