Economic confidence rebounds as fears fade over 2023 recession

                                         

Economic confidence is rising across the globe as clear signs of business improvement emerge.

While the Q1 2023 Global Economic Conditions Survey (GECS) shows confidence lower than a year ago, it rose for the third consecutive quarter as fears fade over the prospects of a recession in 2023.

 

This better news is underlined by the two GECS “Fear’’ indices which reflects respondents concerns that customers and/or suppliers may go out of business. Both these series improved on Q4 2022. Indeed, worries about suppliers have fallen to the lowest level since 2020. And although new orders have flatlined this quarter, the survey showed improvements in both employment and capital expenditure (capex).

 

Although with Central Banks still raising interest rates and the delayed effect of monetary policy tightening on the real economy, as well as recent challenges in the banking sector, it may be premature to sound the “all clear.” 

 

Jamie Lyon, head of skills, sectors and technology at ACCA, said: “The global economy entered 2023 with more momentum than many had expected. Confidence has risen as business comes to terms with the fallout from the Russian-Ukraine war. The economic climate has been helped by a faster-than-expected relaxation of China’s zero-COVID policies, and more normal energy prices in Europe, that should help to reduce headline inflation and may bring about a pause in Central Banks’ tightening of monetary policy, but there are still some downside risks that may prevail.”

 

Loreal Jiles, vice president of research and thought leadership at IMA, said: “Looking at the change in the GECS Confidence Indices over the quarter, what stands out is the 30-point improvement in Confidence in Western Europe. However, this good news was not limited to Europe; Asia-Pacific, North America and South Asia also registered an improvement. This was a broad-based pick-up, with the exception of Africa and the Middle East.”

 

Although Global New Orders are flat-lining, one factor sustaining the rebound in Confidence may be the decline in the level of concern about “increased costs.” Cost pressures look like they may have peaked, although they still remain well above the median recorded over the survey’s history. Commodity prices remain subdued, and Europe has benefitted from natural gas prices returning to levels seen before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

 

Global confidence has edged up for the third consecutive quarter, not only because cost concerns have eased, but also because worries about accessing finance and securing prompt payment have declined.

 

Indeed, reports of problems with prompt payment fell to the second lowest level in the survey’s history. The improved macro conditions also appear to have encouraged companies to revisit their capex and hiring plans.

 

When asked how they planned to respond to the changing economic environment, the net balance of companies planning to increase investment in capital and staff rose on the quarter, as did the net balance of companies planning to increase job creation.

 

This is something of a surprise given the rapid tightening of global monetary policy by the world’s Central Banks. The past 12 months have seen the most aggressive simultaneous tightening of policy in more than 40 years in terms of pace, scale, and breadth. It is curious that this has not yet had a material impact on financing conditions and corporates’ capex and hiring intentions. But monetary policy works with long and variable lags, which suggests that this could still become a problem later in the year.

Google launches first “App Growth Lab” in Pakistan to support high-potential app developers

 

Following the launch of the Gaming Growth Lab in Pakistan last year, Google announced today that it has opened the first-ever App Growth Lab in Pakistan. CARETAKER CM PUNJAB INSTRUCTS COMPLETION OF KALMA CHOWK REMODELING AND CBD PUNJAB BOULEVARD PROJECT BY MAY 5 TH

                                      

Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi visited the Kalma Chowk Remodeling and CBD Punjab Boulevard project in Lahore today to review the development progress. This visit was in continuation of the recent visit by the Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to the same site.

During the visit, CEO CBD Punjab, Mr. Imran Amin, briefed the Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab, on the progress of the project. He informed the CM that the project is nearing completion. The project is expected to bring a significant change to the area, with improved traffic flow and aesthetic appeal. CBD Punjab: Revolutionizing Pakistan's Economic Landscape with Sustainable Development

                                              

Caretaker Provincial Minister for Housing Urban Development and Public Health Engineering Punjab, Barrister Syed Azfar Ali Nasir visited the Central Business District Punjab (CBD Punjab), in Lahore to witness the ongoing sustainable development projects. Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (PCBDDA) also known as Central Business District Punjab (CBD Punjab), is tasked to establish Pakistan's first business district and register the country on the global economic map.

During the visit, the minister was briefed by the Executive Director  Commercial CBD Punjab, Mohammed Omer, about the revenue generation strategies of CBD Punjab. The district funds, builds, and sustains itself without relying on government funding or tax money. The revenue is generated through open auctions, investor networking, public/private partnerships, joint ventures, and government-to-government initiatives.

CBD Punjab is a premium authority with the concept of one-window operation, favorable bylaws, fast approvals, unmatched speed-to-market, investor-friendly ease of doing business and is a center of revenue-generating for the government of Punjab. The authority offers centralized and vertical infrastructure with increased building height limits of up to 750 ft.

CBD Punjab has over 100 plus plots situated in the heart of Lahore with an estimated potential of PKR 500+ billion.

CBD Punjab is currently undertaking several ongoing projects, including the remodeling of the main boulevard from Liberty to Kalma Chowk CBD Punjab Boulevard, planning of Lahore Grand Souk (1122 Site), Infrastructure development of phase I, Car Parking Plaza, and remodeling of Walton Road. The remodeling of the Kalma Chowk underpass project is almost complete with no PC1 revision and soon will be fully functional for traffic

Prime Minister of Pakistan Visits Kalma Chowk Remodeling CBD Punjab Boulevard Project Site

       

Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, visited the Kalma Chowk Remodeling CBD Punjab Boulevard project site in Lahore. The project, which is being carried out by Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (PCBDDA), also known as Central Business District Punjab (CBD Punjab), aims to remodel the Kalma Chowk area, including the underpass, road networks, water supply and drainage lines. The Prime Minister was briefed about the project by CEO CBD Punjab, Imran Amin and other senior officials.

The project, which started on December 4, 2022, was originally scheduled to be completed on June 2, 2023, with a contract price of Rs 4.2 Billion  However, the project will be completed one week ahead of schedule, with no revision of PC1 and well within the allocated budgets and estimates. The contractor for the project is NLC Engineers, and the consultant was NESPAK.

The Kalma Underpass, which has a total length of 925m, has been remodeled, along with the Ali Zeb underpass, with a barrel length of 377 meters, and the CBD Quaid District, with a barrel length of 280 meters. The road networks, totaling 4.98km, have also been rehabilitated. The main Kalma Underpass and allied at-grade roads Ali Zaib Road with Service Lanes are now functional for traffic.

During his visit, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the development pace of the project and lauded the contractor. He also ordered the hiring of a third-party technical validation consultant for the Kalma Chowk remodeling project and also gave the directive to complete the upgradation of Walton Road in two months

In addition, the entire Kalma underpass was opened for traffic on February 24, 2023, upon the instruction of the Caretaker  Chief Minister Punjab, Syed Mohsin Naqvi. All the water supply, sewerage and drainage lines, and two wells, falling under the project area, have been upgraded. A water retention tank with wells at Saint Mary's Park has also been constructed. The underpasses' width, Ali Zeb Road width, Main Boulevard width, and Saint Mary's Road width have been expanded for the easy flow of ongoing traffic.

LCCI and ACCA collaborate to boost SMEs in Pakistan

       

Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) and ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a shared goal of advancing financial literacy among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The MoU was signed by President LCCI, Kashif Anwar and ACCA’s Head of Pakistan, Assad Hameed Khan. ACCA President, Joseph Owolabi, and senior management of both the organisations were also present at the signing ceremony.

The agreement sets out to raise awareness, build capacity, and enable knowledge exchange among SME professionals and entrepreneurs. Both organisations will support initiatives to enhance financial literacy and help build a robust tax culture.

At the signing ceremony, LCCI President, Kashif Anwar, said: ‘I would like to congratulate not only LCCI and ACCA, but also all stakeholders, the business community, and member organisations on the signing of this agreement. It will strengthen the existing collaboration between LCCI and ACCA and support the LCCI member organisations with their capacity building needs, particularly around taxation and financial acumen.’

CBD PUNJAB BOULEVARD AND UNDERPASS PROJECT UNDERWAY TO PROVIDE RELIEF TO DAILY COMMUTERS

                                           

Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (PCBDDA), also known as Central Business District Punjab (CBD Punjab), has been prioritizing the development of the CBD Punjab Boulevard and Underpass project. With the directives of Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, the project is being fast-tracked to provide maximum relief to the general public in their daily commute.

Mr. Imran Amin, CEO of CBD Punjab, visited the CBD Punjab Boulevard and Underpass site to review the progress of the project. During his visit, he lauded the efforts of the CBD Punjab team and contractor National Logistic Cell (NLC), for making the main underpass and adjoining roads functional for traffic.

The construction of Ali Zaib Road barrel raft concrete pouring is currently in progress and will be completed soon. The Ali Zaib Road barrel will be a gift for the general public. To combat environmental hazards, CBD Punjab is also planting 10,000 plants in the vicinity of the project which will have a clean and green impact on the project.

While expressing his views CEO of CBD Punjab, Mr. Imran Amin, said, "Our utmost priority, as per the directive of Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab, is to provide maximum relief to the general public in their daily commute. I am pleased to report that the CBD Punjab Boulevard and Underpass project is 90% complete, and we have opened all the adjoining roads for traffic. Just like PSL 8, CBD Punjab has taken all the important measures for smooth traffic flow during the Pakistan Vs New Zealand T20 series."

Several high-ranking officials of CBD Punjab, including Executive Director Commercial Mr. Mohammad Omer, Executive Director Technical Mr. Riaz Hussain, Director Project Management Mr. Asif Iqbal, and senior officials of CBD Punjab and NLC were also present during the visit.

The CBD Punjab Boulevard and Underpass project will be a significant development in the province of Punjab. It will provide much-needed relief to daily commuters by easing traffic

CBD PUNJAB BOULEVARD AND UNDERPASS FULLY FUNCTIONAL FOR TRAFFIC IN A RECORD TIME OF 4 MONTHS, ANNOUNCES PCBDDA.

                                             

Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (PCBDDA) has made CBD Punjab Boulevard and Underpass and its adjoining roads functional for traffic in a record time of four months. The project was initiated in November 2022 by PCBDDA also known as Central Business District Punjab (CBD Punjab). 

The CBD Punjab Boulevard and Underpass connect the Barket Market to Liberty and vice versa, with three lanes on both sides of the underpass now open to traffic. In addition, the carriage lane and service lane on Ali Zaib Road are also operational for traffic coming from Firdous Market towards Liberty and Barket Market. The barrel of Ali Zaib Road is also 90% completed and will be finished soon.

CEO of CBD Punjab, Mr. Imran Amin, said, "We are pleased to announce that the CBD Punjab Boulevard and Underpass have been made functional in just 4 months, which is ahead of our original timeline of 7 months. We wanted to provide maximum relief to the people, especially during the holy month of Ramadan. We hope to save the citizens of Lahore from traffic issues during Iftar time."

The construction work is in its final stages, and the CBD Punjab Barrel is also near completion, which will provide hassle-free entry to Pakistan's first business district. The project is expected to boost economic growth.
